A Split Second
There’s a magnetism in an authentic moment, when we get to witness a person’s soul.
— Alyson

Who you are is important to me. Your personality. Your uniquenesses. Your sensitivities. There are countless details that make you, YOU. I want to help you bring those traits out to create portraits people connect to because they see who you are.

Have you ever looked at a picture of someone and said, "They look like someone I could be friends with?"

I have. Plenty of times.

There's a magnetism in an authentic moment, when we get to witness a person's soul.

That authenticity happens in a split second. Quite literally, a split second. There have been times where I've taken two photographs back to back - one right at the climax of the moment and the other right before or right after.

It never fails that the photograph where the timing is a split second off, you can see the minute details that don't fullfill the expression of that person's emotion.

I always seek out that spark, that single moment when every bit of you shines through. I love to see you be Seen, in every tiny detail.

Stacks | Winston-Salem Headshot and Brand Photographer | Jasper & Fern

For the longest time I used to conceptualize only in my head, storing my inspirations in anxious await of the day I could bring them into fruition. After a while though, all those ideas start to pile up in different stacks in my brain. Some of my once effervescent ideas eventually faded away into the cobwebs filling the corners of my brain after getting pushed further and further back on the inspiration list.

That's why I started a dream journal - a place where I could scrawl my textures and jot the flashes of stories with the lower risk of their lives fading away into dark recesses. My dream journal previously only served my personal creativity. Then, I had an epiphany and recognized that my creative process - if I looked at it broadly - was much the same across all the avenues I put my ideas into.

Now, on any given day, you can find me with stacks of active clipboards - each containing a brand or concept profile - full of sketches, stories, inspiration and all things mood related for client projects. It's these parts of growth that I've come to appreciate over my life's journey. I'm glad that I found a harmony with which I can help bring the ideas of others to life as I've previously done for myself.

15 Brands in 48 Hours | Winston Salem Brand Photographer | Jasper & Fern

Happy 2021, everybody!! We’re currently catching up our blog content from the before holiday break and didn’t want to leave you hanging. Soooooo, we thought we’d flash back to the time we worked with the AMAZING #LoveforthelocalNC group and photographed (edited and completed) promotional brand images for 15 businesses all in the span of 48 hours. What a whirlwind of creativity that was - and OH so much fun!

A big shout out to some of our new local favorites and all the businesses that were involved :

And a HUGE, HUGE shout out to model Sarah Kaiser for helping out!

Organized Chaos | Winston-Salem Branding Photographer | Jasper & Fern

If you asked my husband to describe my organizational skills, he’d chuckle lovingly and tell you I don’t organize like most people. I’d have to agree. Most of the time, in fact, if you see me behind the scenes I’ll be covered with dog hair, stray hairs spraying out of my braid, my bangs every which way, muttering to myself while standing in front of an overloaded table or sitting at a cluttered desk. (Tidiness is truly not one of my virtues.) It may surprise you to know, however, that in my cluttered mind I’m intensely detail oriented.

I’ll get a concept in my mind and hunt down the pillar elements that give foundation to the idea. Then, I’ll allow the space for the other elements to happen organically - as art should be. In my own mind, this process works well. On the outside, however, this process more than likely looks like disheveled clutter. I’m partial, sure, but I think it’s a beautiful mess.

Just like in my own mess, I love to get a raw look behind the brands I work with. I like to see their turning wheels and the structures (or lack there of) that work best for them. I like to see how the business owner’s brain works.

It’s in this observation behind the scenes that I get to jump into the inner workings of a small business. I get to examine the cogs, study the blue prints of why there were places where they were and how they connect to everything else. Every detail has its reason, after all, and every element has its story. A story I love to tell through beautiful brand photographs - organized chaos and all.
