The Secret Garden | Winston Salem Headshot Photographer

Growing up, The Secret Garden was one of my favorite stories. So, when the Spring Theatre - a local Winston Salem theatre - approached me about doing headshots for their Secret Garden production I was excited. We had already worked with them and Carrie Leigh Designs to create their promotional poster. (Click here to see the final poster and the behind the scenes creation). I met them for a late night rehearsal at the Hanesbrands Theatre to photograph the cast and crew members. One of the best perks was getting to listen to their singing!

Below are some of our favorite headshots.

Building Women, Building Community

Incredible and powerful movement can happen when like hearted people come together. I knew this when I walked in the doors at the WinMock at Kinderton. I’d been here to both attend and photograph weddings but never for anything else. A team of amazing ladies from the DCCC Small Business Center, the Davie Chamber of Commerce and the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce, WordJack Media, the Forsyth Tech Small Business Center and the Mitchell County Community College Small Business Center came together to create the Building Community, Building Women’s conference - and, wow, it was incredible! When I stepped in the door, I knew the day would be great, I just didn’t expect everything that happened next.

Amazing women shared their hearts and expertise on topics like becoming an authentic leader, seeing fate and balancing faith as a womanpreneur, networking with a purpose, overcoming challenges and strategies to help your business grow. There were heart centered and business centered talks that meshed together in a powerful way, filling the day with honest laughter and tears, hugs of new friends and old friends. It was true community.

I was reminded how to look at myself with honest examination, how to face obstacles head on, how to rely on the people around me for what I cannot do myself, how to connect genuinely and the importance of sharing my story. These are all incredible lessons to constantly be learning and growing in and I am so glad I had the opportunity to be surrounded by such inspiring women.

For a sneak peek at the day (or if you’re a business woman who is interesting in attending next year) feel free to check out the event gallery!

Winston Salem YOGA FESTIVAL

With the smell of sage and essential oils in the air, the morning atmosphere was peaceful as the attendees of the Winston Salem Yoga Festival prepared for their mindfulness walk. The day was set to be full of community, learning, intention and people doing and being yoga.

Community was certainly a key component for the day, with yoga instructors from many of our local studios from K10 Yoga CoOp, Yoga Dogz, Wildlight, The Breathing Room, Paz, Village Yoga and many, many more! Individual break out sessions were hosted by local experts like Loving Kindness Yoga & Reiki, 2b Yoga and Healing Vibes. It was truly a packed day and we enjoyed covering every minute of it!

Check out the day for yourself and make sure to put it on your calendar for next year! (Click the image below)

Plus, stay tuned for our community project we did for the event ;)

Celebrating Jill
I want to be me. Take me as I am.
— Jill

A warmness emanates from Jill. She’s such a grounded, sweet person. Over the course of a year and a half, our paths crossed here and there while she was in yoga teacher training at the K10 Yoga CoOp that's located inside of Jasper & Fern. She was always smiling or in this quiet, reflective space. No matter where she was personally though, she always greeted me with a kind smile, occasionally exchanging hiking stories, body acceptance journeys and, every once in a while she'd say "I need to talk with you about pictures." The more I got to know her and the more she shared about her journey, the more I wanted to photograph her and looked forward to her reaching out.

Then she told me, "I'm turning 50. I need to do this."

The day was cold and bitter. I didn't much feel like doing anything besides curling up in a cozy blanket and sleeping. Yet, Jill came in with her warmth glowing and an excited but nervous smile. We sat on the couch beginning to chat and she extended her heart.

"I don't want to be something that I'm not," she said as we discussed the vision for her portrait session. She shared about her body acceptance journey - going from 300 pounds to fluctuating as she let go of the weight. She shared about her love for herself overall, not just with weight but with appreciating who she is and everything she brought to the table. Plus, she was coming up on her birthday and knew this would be the perfect way to celebrate her tremendous personal growth and her love of her strong body.

You see, she's a natural beauty, Jill. She has this way about her that reveals her confidence and tenderness as if she were letting you in on a secret. She has the kindest of souls and the warmest of smiles. We wanted to capture the free-flowing nature she had been working so hard to achieve, the fun bounce in her curls, the depth of her eyes and - of course - the warmth of her smile. And so, we sat in the space as friends, making space for her unfold in front of the camera.
